I assumed that by pulling out the looped spring under the chassis, the spindle would simply lift out, but this isn't the case.  Anyone know what else has to be done to release said spindle?

Is it held by the circlip holding the turntable platter on, sometimes these have a flat on them which can engage with the spindle.

The turntable circlip is missing on the UA25 in question, Mike. I wanted to remove the spindle, wrap and pack it separately, but couldn't easily remove it.

Most record players I have come across the stacking spindle pulls out, but I am not saying that is the case for all.
