Has anyone tried this on their scopes yet? You get better results with his downloads.

Did this at Tech college a very long time ago, never tried since to be honest.

As an apprentice with Ferranti I got involved with building units like this as an aid to deaf children in learning to talk. It gave very distinct patterns for vowel sounds in particular.

I can remember seeing the instructions for determining frequency using a fixed oscillator and an unknown signal by counting the number of lobes in the displayed image.
I tried it on a C15 dingle beam scope I once had and it did work. I bought a DFM about a couple of years later.
if you've got an odd shaped waveform that's difficult for a counter then Lissajous or a dual beam scope used with a decent signal generator can be a better bet.
It is always worth knowing how to do it the old way. A life time is not enough to do it the old way every time hence the DFM.
There are not that many scopes about that have the X input on the front.
On many Teks you can switch one of the Y channels to act as the X input.

Or use the dual beam approach as I suggseted.
I am pretty sure my 7000 can do that. You have reminded me to make up that cable to go between the buffered Y amp and the DFM I bought all those years ago because I still have it and it fits nicely above the screen on my 7000. Due to the length of the frame there is enough room at the front for the depth of the DFM on top.
My old HP1725A has a selection that lets you use one of the Y inputs as X.
