Like it says, I have never attempted a TV yet, no Aurora, so I was thinking along the lines of a dual standard set, I quite possibly fancy a go at a Ferguson personnel or something similar,
What other dual standard sets could anyone recommend for a novice, and if anyone has anyone anything suitable for sale please PM me.
These BRC sets are a good starting point, as the LOPT is OK. If you haven't got an Aurora, then Dual Standard and 625 Only ones are the best starting point.
Those sets are nice! Other sets I recommend are the BRC1400, BRC1500, Pye 169 or a single standard Decca that is in better condition than that one of mine was!
One is not enough...
Cheers,
Steve P.
Thanks for the reply Steve, seems there are quite a few sets with the BRC1400/1500 chassis, Ultra seems to come up quite a few times in a search,
I would like nothing bigger than a 19 inch screen probably for a first one, have got to get SWMBO used to the idea yet.
only exception would be if I could find a Scophony Mechanical television tucked away in some barn, (we can all live in hope)
How about a BRC1580 chassis - A 12 Inch version of the 1500 series...
(Note : Not to be confused with the BRC1590 chassis, which is similar on the outside but all transistorised...)
Cheers,
Steve P,
If I have searched correctly Steve, would a Ferguson 3805 be an example of this chassis, and did it have a transistorized brother?
if you want a valve set i too would look for a singel std the advantage of getting a brc 1500 is the mass of info about it.
a bullet proof lopt ,and no rare chips or valves, pye 169 nice looking set but taa700's are getting scarse.
for a hard wired chassis how about a kb vc100 no chips at all.
another set i liked to work on is bush tv181 serries
i cant remember ever repairing a valve decca monocrome s/std so cant comment

I've had very similar thoughts. I liked that Decca that Tiny Tim recently reported on but share his dislike of those black beetles which just sit there looking malign.
The BRC1500 also suffers from silicon contamination but I expect that by the time dual standard or 625 only sets were being made that would be the norm.

you are right joe by the time s/std set came in about 1970 not only had transistors become common even the vc100 has one in the agc circuit.
but new to us was the use of chips mainly in the sound stage
and sony and other jap makers were all solid state(1970)
