1N4007 seems to work better than 1N4001 as varicap. It also works a little like a PIN diode as it's slow and larger region due to high PIV (i.e. Resistance varies with forward current, but RF higher volts than bias won't be rectified). PIN diodes often have a LOWER RF frequency limit for use.
A 1N4148 or 1N916 is rubbish as PIN or Varicap as the capacitance is too small and the RF switching speed is good.
