Thank you for the compliment Alan. With so few reference points I can't say what the cabinet appearance would have been originally, but all I did was scrape off the old finish (see pic), sand smooth and then refinish without any added stain/colourant to the button polish. As you can see from the pre-restored pic the grain was very prominent on this particular receiver and so it would, I suspect, have been quite obvious, even with a completely clear varnish. The wood colour may have altered over the last 80 years too and perhaps the grain wasn't as obvious originally. I'd like to think the look it isn't much different now to how it would have been originally. That was what I wanted to achieve.
