The real problem with nukes is that they're too expensive. Especially when you factor in total life cycle costs. Also the political cost of underwriting rare but huge risks that can't be commercially insured.
There is potential for small scale nukes, if the economics and politics can both be got to work. Economies of scale by having production lines of smaller modular reactors. Various approaches, some based on submarine power plants, others rather bigger. Potential for lower cost using thorium cycle reactors but this is barely out of research phase.
